Sun Yung Shin 신 선 영
신 선 영 Sun Yung Shin is a Korean-born poet and writer. With Mélina Mangal she is the co-author of Revolutions Are Made of Love: The Story of James Boggs and Grace Lee Boggs, illustrated by Leslie Barlow (Lerner Publishing, Nov. 2025). She is a co-author of the Carter G. Woodson Award-winning picture book Where We Come From(Lerner Publishing), illustrated by Dion MBD, which was also a finalist for a 2023 Minnesota Book Award. She is the author of Cooper’s Lesson (Lee & Low Books), a bilingual Korean/English picture book illustrated by Kim Cogan and translated by Min Paek. She is the author of five poetry collections, including The Wet Hex, a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award, and Unbearable Splendor, winner of a 2017 Minnesota Book Award, and Skirt Full of Black, winner of an Asian American Literary Award. She is the editor of A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota and What We Hunger For: Refugee and Immigrant Stories about Food and Family; and co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption. Her first full-length creative nonfiction book Heart Eater: A Memoir of Immigration, Belonging, and How We Find Ourselves in Language is forthcoming in May, 2026 from Black Lawrence Press. With Sarah Park Dahlen, she is the co-author of a forthcoming adaptation, Asian American Histories of the United States for Young People, forthcoming from Beacon Press in 2026. She lives in Minneapolis with her family.
