Three things about . . . Alyssa Joy Miller
What inspired you to write your first picture book?
My first picture book, Like God, came about with my six-year-old daughter while we were coloring landscapes. I noticed the mountain in our pictures and said, "God is such an artist. The mountains are big and great like God.”
How has your writing evolved since you first began publishing?
My spiritual journey and worldview I write from have evolved. I pursued my MFA, so my understanding of craft has come a long way. And I feel like I'm scratching the surface of writing racially complex characters.
What is your typical writing routine?
I write for an hour every Sunday morning with the Brown Noise Community. Every few months, I do a concerted weekend writing retreat. Retreats are incredibly effective for me.
